History of Upper Saddle River

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Upper Saddle River to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Upper Saddle River, a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, boasts a rich history that dates back to the pre-Revolutionary War era. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before Dutch settlers arrived in the early 18th century. The name "Saddle River" is believed to have been derived from the settlers' comparison of the area's valleys to a saddle.

The borough was officially incorporated on November 22, 1894, from portions of Hohokus Township and Orvil Township. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Upper Saddle River was characterized by large farms and mills, which were powered by the Saddle River. The rural nature of the community was preserved due to its late development in terms of transportation infrastructure.

In the 20th century, Upper Saddle River began to transform from a farming community into a suburban residential area. Post-World War II development brought an influx of residents seeking a quiet, pastoral lifestyle within commuting distance of New York City. Today, Upper Saddle River is known for its affluent neighborhoods, excellent schools, and a strong sense of community, making it an attractive location for families and professionals alike.

Residents and potential newcomers to Upper Saddle River can appreciate the borough's commitment to preserving its historical charm while offering modern amenities. The area's history is celebrated through local landmarks such as the Hopper-Goetschius House Museum, which dates back to 1739 and serves as a symbol of the borough's rich heritage.
