History of Tewksbury

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Tewksbury for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Tewksbury Township, nestled in the northeastern part of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, boasts a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1755. Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, the area was later settled by Europeans, primarily of English and Dutch descent. The township's name is believed to be derived from Tewkesbury, England, reflecting the English influence on the region.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Tewksbury's economy was predominantly agricultural, with many farms dotting the landscape. The township's fertile soil and abundant water sources from the Lamington River and its tributaries supported a variety of crops and livestock. The rural character of Tewksbury has been preserved through the centuries, with numerous historic structures still standing, including the Zion Lutheran Church, established in 1714, and the Oldwick Historic District, which showcases well-preserved colonial architecture.

In the 20th century, Tewksbury evolved into a residential community, attracting residents who appreciated its scenic beauty, open spaces, and proximity to major urban centers like New York City. Despite this growth, Tewksbury has maintained its small-town charm and commitment to preserving its natural and historical heritage. Today, Tewksbury is known for its excellent schools, recreational opportunities, and community events that celebrate its history and tight-knit community spirit.

For those living in or considering a move to Tewksbury, the township offers a unique blend of historical richness and modern living, making it an attractive place to call home.
