History of Spring Lake

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Spring Lake for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Spring Lake, New Jersey, is a charming seaside community with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Known for its serene two-mile boardwalk and non-commercialized atmosphere, Spring Lake has been a haven for visitors and residents alike, seeking tranquility by the sea.

The area now known as Spring Lake was originally settled by the Lenape Native Americans, who were attracted to the region's abundant natural resources. In the early 1800s, European settlers were drawn to the area for its fertile soil and the potential for industry. The town's name is derived from the clear spring-fed lake situated at its center, which was a vital resource for the growing community.

By the late 1800s, Spring Lake evolved into a fashionable resort destination for the wealthy, with grand hotels and Victorian homes dotting the landscape. The town's reputation for luxury and exclusivity was bolstered by the construction of opulent summer mansions by prominent families, earning it the nickname "The Irish Riviera."

Throughout the 20th century, Spring Lake maintained its status as a premier resort town, surviving economic fluctuations and the Great Depression. The community has preserved much of its historic architecture, with many homes and buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Spring Lake is a residential community that prides itself on its small-town charm, beautiful beaches, and commitment to preserving its historical character. Its residents enjoy a peaceful lifestyle with the benefits of seaside living, making it an attractive location for those looking to move to a quiet, upscale neighborhood with a sense of history.
