History of Shelton

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Shelton or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Shelton, Connecticut, nestled in Fairfield County, boasts a rich history that dates back to its pre-colonial era. Originally home to the Paugussett Native American tribe, the area was first settled by Europeans around 1639 when it became part of the town of Stratford. It wasn't until 1789 that Shelton, then known as Huntington, became an independent community.

During the 19th century, Shelton's proximity to the Housatonic River catalyzed its growth as an industrial hub. The river's power was harnessed for manufacturing, and the town saw the rise of factories producing goods such as pins, combs, and clocks. The establishment of the Shelton Tack Company in 1855 marked a significant economic development, and the borough of Shelton was incorporated in 1882.

The 20th century brought further expansion and modernization. In 1915, Shelton was chartered as a city, and the construction of the Derby-Shelton Dam in 1917 provided additional power for industries. The post-World War II era saw a shift from manufacturing to a more diversified economy, with corporate offices and retail businesses taking root.

Today, Shelton is a blend of its historical roots and contemporary suburban living. Residents and newcomers alike appreciate the city's scenic beauty, community spirit, and its balance of residential charm with economic vitality. With a nod to its past and an eye on the future, Shelton continues to evolve while maintaining its unique character within Connecticut.
