History of Old Tappan

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Old Tappan or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Old Tappan, New Jersey, is a borough with a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Nestled in the northern part of Bergen County, this charming community offers a glimpse into the past while providing the amenities of modern suburban living.

The area now known as Old Tappan was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The name "Tappan" is believed to be derived from a Native American word, and the prefix "Old" was later added to distinguish the borough from the neighboring Tappan, New York. European settlers, primarily Dutch, began to establish themselves in the region in the 17th century, drawn by the fertile land and the Hackensack River's resources.

Incorporated in 1894, Old Tappan has evolved from its agricultural roots into a desirable residential area. The borough played a modest role in the American Revolution, with local lore suggesting that General George Washington and his troops passed through the area. The 18th and 19th centuries saw the growth of farms and mills, shaping the community's early economy.

Today, Old Tappan is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and tight-knit community, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike. The borough maintains a balance between honoring its historical heritage and embracing growth, ensuring that residents enjoy a high quality of life in a town with a storied past.

Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful suburban retreat, Old Tappan offers a unique blend of history and modern living that continues to draw new residents to its scenic streets.
