History of Old Bridge

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Old Bridge is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Old Bridge, New Jersey, is a township with a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. Originally incorporated as Madison Township on March 2, 1869, from portions of South Amboy Township, it was later renamed Old Bridge Township on November 5, 1975. The township's name change was driven by the desire to capitalize on the historical significance of an older, 18th-century bridge that spanned the South River, which was considered a landmark by the local residents.

Before European colonization, the area was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, who left behind artifacts and place names. The Dutch first settled the region in the 17th century, followed by the English. The township's strategic location along the Raritan Bayshore near the Raritan River made it a pivotal area for trade and transportation.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Old Bridge saw significant growth and development. The arrival of the Camden and Amboy Railroad and later the Garden State Parkway, which opened in 1954, contributed to the township's suburbanization and population growth. Today, Old Bridge is known for its diverse community, excellent schools, and numerous parks and recreational facilities, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike.

For those living in or considering a move to Old Bridge, the township's history is a testament to its enduring community spirit and its evolution from a colonial settlement to a modern suburban town. Its historical roots continue to shape its identity and offer a sense of continuity amidst the ever-changing landscape of New Jersey.
