History of Oceanside

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Oceanside or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Oceanside, New York, is a hamlet and census-designated place located on the South Shore of Long Island in the town of Hempstead. Its history is rich and dates back to the early settlement of Long Island.

Originally known as South Bay, the area that is now Oceanside was sparsely populated for centuries. The native Rockaway Indians were the original inhabitants, utilizing the land for fishing and hunting. European settlers, mainly English and Dutch, began to establish homesteads in the 17th century.

The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in the 19th century marked a significant turning point for the community. It transformed from a rural farming area into a more developed and accessible residential locale. The name "Oceanside" was officially adopted in 1890, reflecting the community's proximity to the ocean and its aspirations for seaside development.

Throughout the 20th century, Oceanside continued to grow, with the population booming post-World War II as veterans returned and sought suburban homes. The area saw the construction of schools, parks, and a variety of businesses, establishing a strong sense of community.

Today, Oceanside is known for its family-friendly environment, quality schools, and a variety of recreational activities. Its history as a once-quiet farming area is still visible in some of the older architecture and street names, blending with modern amenities to create a unique and desirable place to live.

For those living in or considering a move to Oceanside, the area's history is a testament to its resilience and adaptability, promising a community that values both its past and its future.
