History of New Britain

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of New Britain for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

New Britain, Connecticut, known as the "Hardware City" due to its rich industrial history, has a storied past that reflects the growth and change of America. Founded in 1687, it was originally a part of nearby Farmington known as the "Great Swamp." In 1754, it was incorporated as a new parish and named New Britain, a name believed to be inspired by Great Britain.

The city's transformation began with the establishment of North & Judd, a manufacturing company, in 1812. This marked the beginning of New Britain's industrial era. The city's central location in Connecticut made it a hub for manufacturing, especially for hardware and tool production. By the late 19th century, New Britain was home to many factories, including the Stanley Works, which became famous for its tools and hardware.

The influx of immigrants from Europe provided a workforce for the factories and contributed to the city's cultural diversity. This diversity is still celebrated today with various ethnic festivals and events. The 20th century saw New Britain evolve with suburbanization and the decline of manufacturing. However, the city has been working towards revitalization, focusing on education, with Central Connecticut State University playing a significant role, and redeveloping its downtown area.

For those living in or considering moving to New Britain, the city offers a rich history, a diverse community, and a commitment to growth and innovation. Its historical significance and ongoing development make it an interesting and dynamic place to call home.
