History of Metuchen

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Metuchen or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Metuchen, New Jersey, often referred to as "The Brainy Borough," boasts a rich history that dates back to the early 18th century. Initially part of Woodbridge Township, Metuchen started as a village located along the road from New Brunswick to Perth Amboy. This road, now known as Middlesex Avenue, was a critical thoroughfare for stagecoaches and travelers in colonial America.

The town's name is believed to have been derived from a Native American chief named Matouchin. By the 19th century, Metuchen had grown significantly due to the arrival of the railroad in 1836, which connected it to other major cities and contributed to its development as a residential community. The Metuchen station became a hub of activity and helped to establish the town as a convenient place for commuters.

In 1900, Metuchen officially separated from Woodbridge Township and was incorporated as a borough. Throughout the 20th century, Metuchen continued to flourish as a suburban enclave with a strong sense of community and a commitment to preserving its historical charm. The borough's downtown area, with its quaint shops and restaurants, reflects the small-town feel that residents and visitors cherish.

Today, Metuchen is known for its excellent schools, cultural events, and community-oriented lifestyle. Its history is celebrated by the Metuchen-Edison Historical Society, which works to preserve the borough's rich heritage. For those living in or considering a move to Metuchen, the borough's history is a testament to its enduring appeal as a place to call home.
