History of Madison

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of Madison is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Madison, New Jersey, often referred to as "The Rose City," has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, the area was later settled by Europeans in the 17th century. Madison was initially a part of the larger Morris Township before it was incorporated as a borough on December 27, 1889.

During the 19th century, Madison evolved from a small rural community into a growing town. The construction of the Morris and Essex Railroad in the 1830s was a significant catalyst for development, making Madison a popular residential area for wealthy New Yorkers seeking a country retreat. The town's affluence during this period led to the construction of many Victorian mansions, some of which still stand today.

In the 20th century, Madison continued to grow, both in population and in cultural significance. It became home to two major educational institutions: Drew University, founded in 1867, and Fairleigh Dickinson University's College at Florham, established in 1958. These institutions have played a vital role in shaping the community's character and economy.

Today, Madison is known for its vibrant downtown area, historic architecture, and community-oriented atmosphere. Its residents enjoy a high quality of life with excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a variety of cultural and recreational activities. The town's history is preserved and celebrated by the Madison Historical Society, which offers resources and events for those interested in learning more about Madison's past.

Whether you're a long-time resident or considering a move to Madison, the town's storied past and charming character make it a unique and inviting place to call home.
