History of Lyme

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Lyme to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Lyme, Connecticut, is a small, picturesque town nestled on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River in New London County. Its history is rich and deeply rooted in the early days of American settlement. Established in 1665, Lyme was originally a part of Saybrook Colony, which was one of the first three English settlements in Connecticut. The town's name is believed to have been inspired by Lyme Regis, a coastal town in England.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Lyme was a thriving maritime community. Its proximity to the Connecticut River facilitated trade and shipbuilding, which became the backbone of the local economy. Many sea captains built their homes in Lyme, and some of these historic houses still stand today, offering a glimpse into the town's prosperous past.

The town also played a role in the American Revolutionary War. It was the site of a British raid in 1781, which resulted in the burning of several ships and warehouses. Despite such events, the community remained resilient and continued to grow.

Today, Lyme is known for its serene landscapes, including the beautiful Selden Neck State Park, which is accessible only by water. The town maintains a rural charm with a strong sense of community and a commitment to preserving its natural and historical heritage. For those considering moving to Lyme, or for current residents, the town offers a peaceful retreat with a storied past, making it a unique place to call home.
