History of Long Beach Island

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Long Beach Island or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Long Beach Island, affectionately known as LBI by locals, is a barrier island and summer colony along the Atlantic Ocean coast of Ocean County, New Jersey. Its rich history dates back to the early 1600s when it was first spotted by European explorers. The island was originally used by the indigenous Lenape people for fishing and hunting before European settlers arrived.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Long Beach Island became known for its maritime activities, including whaling and shipping. It was also during this time that the island saw the construction of the iconic Barnegat Lighthouse, completed in 1859, which served as a crucial navigational aid for vessels navigating the treacherous waters near the Barnegat Inlet.

The tourism industry began to flourish in the late 19th century as visitors sought the pristine beaches of LBI for relaxation and recreation. Hotels and boarding houses sprang up to accommodate the growing number of tourists. The arrival of the automobile and the construction of the first causeway in 1914 made the island more accessible, further boosting its popularity as a summer destination.

Today, Long Beach Island is a blend of historical charm and modern convenience, with a community that values its heritage. The island is home to a mix of year-round residents and seasonal visitors, all drawn to its beautiful beaches, quaint shopping districts, and the serene atmosphere. For those considering moving to LBI, the island offers a unique lifestyle that combines a rich historical backdrop with the allure of coastal living.
