History of Hillsborough Township

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Hillsborough Township or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Hillsborough Township, nestled in Somerset County, New Jersey, boasts a rich history that dates back to the pre-Revolutionary War era. The township was officially chartered on September 12, 1771, and has since grown into a vibrant community that offers a blend of historical charm and modern living.

The area was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, and European settlers began to arrive in the early 18th century. Hillsborough's strategic location along the Millstone River contributed to its early development, with mills and agriculture becoming the backbone of the local economy. During the American Revolution, the township witnessed several significant movements of George Washington's troops, adding to its historical significance.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Hillsborough continued to thrive as a farming community. The introduction of railroads and better roads facilitated the transportation of goods and people, further integrating the township into the region's growing economy. The 20th century saw a shift from agriculture to a more suburban landscape, with residential developments and businesses taking root.

Today, Hillsborough Township is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community. Its historical sites, such as the Van der Veer-Harris House and the Doris Duke Estate, offer residents and visitors a glimpse into the township's storied past. As Hillsborough continues to grow and evolve, it remains a desirable place to live, work, and raise a family, while still honoring the rich tapestry of its history.
