History of Haworth

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Haworth or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Nestled in the northern part of Bergen County, Haworth, New Jersey, is a small borough with a rich history that dates back to its incorporation on February 24, 1904. Before becoming the charming residential community it is today, the area was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, who found the region's fertile land ideal for fishing and farming.

The name "Haworth" was adopted from the English hometown of an early settler, and the borough's development was influenced by the arrival of the West Shore Railroad in the late 19th century. This transportation link spurred growth and attracted affluent New Yorkers seeking a country retreat. The serene landscape, with the picturesque Haworth Pond, created by damming the Oradell Reservoir, added to the borough's allure.

Throughout the 20th century, Haworth maintained its small-town feel, with a strong sense of community and local pride. The borough's layout, with its tree-lined streets and family-friendly parks, reflects the careful planning and desire to preserve the natural beauty of the area. Haworth's historic homes and public buildings, such as the Haworth Municipal Library, which opened in 1930, contribute to the borough's character and serve as reminders of its past.

Today, Haworth is known for its excellent schools, active community life, and proximity to New York City, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike. Its history is cherished by residents, who are committed to preserving the borough's heritage while fostering a welcoming environment for newcomers.
