History of East Brunswick

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of East Brunswick is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

East Brunswick, a suburban community in Middlesex County, New Jersey, has a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, the area was settled by Europeans in the 17th century. It was part of the original 104 lots laid out in East Jersey under the proprietary government.

The township was officially incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 28, 1860, from portions of both Monroe Township and North Brunswick Township. The town's name is believed to have been derived from the city of Brunswick in Germany, reflecting the heritage of the early German settlers.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, East Brunswick remained largely agrarian, known for its fertile soil and successful farms. The 20th century brought significant changes with the construction of the New Jersey Turnpike in the 1950s, which spurred residential and commercial development. This transformed East Brunswick from a farming community into a bustling suburb.

Today, East Brunswick is known for its excellent public school system, diverse population, and convenient location, with easy access to major highways and cities like New York and Philadelphia. The township continues to grow and evolve, while still maintaining a connection to its historical roots, offering a unique blend of modern amenities and historical charm for residents and newcomers alike.
