History of Demarest

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Demarest for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Nestled in the heart of Bergen County, Demarest, New Jersey, is a small borough with a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. The area that is now Demarest was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before Dutch settlers arrived in the 1600s. The town's name honors the Demarest family, early settlers of French Huguenot descent, who played a significant role in the region's development.

In the 19th century, Demarest experienced significant growth with the arrival of the Northern Railroad of New Jersey in 1859, which connected the area to Hoboken and the rest of the New York metropolitan area. This development led to Demarest becoming a popular spot for New Yorkers seeking a rural retreat from city life. The borough was officially incorporated in 1903, carved out of portions of Harrington Township (now dissolved), Palisades Township, and Closter.

Throughout the 20th century, Demarest maintained its small-town charm while adapting to the changes around it. The borough is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community. Its historic landmarks, such as the Demarest Railroad Depot, now a museum, and the Duck Pond, continue to be central to the town's character and are a nod to its past.

Today, Demarest is a desirable residential area that offers a blend of suburban tranquility and accessibility to New York City, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike. Its history is cherished by residents, who take pride in their borough's heritage and work together to preserve its unique identity.
