History of Copiague

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Copiague for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Copiague, a hamlet within the town of Babylon in Suffolk County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to its original inhabitants, the Secatogue tribe of the Algonquin Indians. The name "Copiague" itself is derived from the Native American word for "sheltered harbor," reflecting the area's geography along the Great South Bay.

European settlement in the area began in the 17th century, with the land primarily used for farming and fishing. The South Side Railroad of Long Island, which arrived in the 1860s, brought significant changes, transforming Copiague into a more accessible and attractive area for development and industry. By the early 20th century, Copiague had become a hub for manufacturing and a popular summer resort destination for New Yorkers seeking a seaside escape.

The post-World War II era saw a housing boom in Copiague, as returning veterans and their families sought suburban homes. The population grew rapidly, and the community evolved with the construction of schools, parks, and local businesses. Today, Copiague is a diverse and vibrant community, with a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and waterfront properties.

Residents and potential newcomers to Copiague can appreciate its historical roots while enjoying the benefits of its strategic location, close to beaches, parks, and a short train ride away from New York City. The hamlet continues to honor its past while looking forward to a bright future.
