History of Brookville

Brookville, located on the North Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, is a village with a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe, the area was first settled by Europeans in the 1600s. The village was part of the larger area known as the Town of Oyster Bay.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Brookville remained largely agricultural, with many farms and some of the most fertile soil on Long Island. The rural character of the village began to change in the early 20th century when wealthy New York City residents started building grand estates in the area, attracted by its natural beauty and proximity to the city. This led to Brookville being recognized as one of the wealthiest and most exclusive communities in the United States.

In 1931, Brookville was incorporated as a village, allowing it to maintain local control over zoning and land use. The post-World War II era saw a transition from large estates to suburban development, with many of the estates being subdivided into smaller residential lots. Despite this change, Brookville has managed to preserve much of its bucolic charm and historical significance.

Today, Brookville is known for its exceptional schools, including the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, and its commitment to preserving open space and historical landmarks.
