History of Brentwood

Brentwood, a hamlet within the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Secatogue tribe, the area was later settled by Europeans in the 1650s. The modern history of Brentwood can be traced to the 1850s when it was founded by developer Joshua's Path as a community for free African Americans. In the late 19th century, the community was renamed Brentwood after the town of Brentwood, Essex in England.
