History of Brentwood

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Brentwood for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Brentwood, a hamlet within the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Secatogue tribe, the area was later settled by Europeans in the 1650s. The modern history of Brentwood can be traced to the 1850s when it was founded by developer Joshua's Path as a community for free African Americans. The original name of the community was "Modern Times," reflecting the utopian ideals of its early settlers.

In the late 19th century, the community was renamed Brentwood after the town of Brentwood, Essex in England. This change coincided with the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road, which provided a direct link to New York City and contributed to the area's growth. Over the years, Brentwood transformed from a small farming community to a suburban enclave.

The 20th century saw significant demographic shifts, with an influx of veterans after World War II and a growing Hispanic population in the latter half of the century. Today, Brentwood is known for its cultural diversity, with a vibrant mix of Hispanic, African American, and other ethnic communities.

Residents and potential newcomers to Brentwood can appreciate its historical roots while enjoying the benefits of a close-knit community with easy access to urban amenities. The hamlet continues to honor its past through local landmarks and community events that celebrate its unique heritage.
