History of Atlantic City
Summary: Here is a brief history of Atlantic City for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Atlantic City, a coastal resort city in New Jersey, has a rich and varied history that has shaped its unique character. Founded in the mid-19th century, it quickly became a popular tourist destination due to its beaches and the construction of the first boardwalk in 1870. This wooden walkway was created to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, and it became a defining feature of the city.
The introduction of the railroad in 1870 further boosted Atlantic City's popularity, making it accessible to visitors from Philadelphia and beyond. The city's Golden Age began in the 1920s, marked by the construction of grand hotels and the Miss America pageant, which started in 1921. During Prohibition, Atlantic City became notorious for its speakeasies and illicit activities, earning it the nickname "The World's Playground."
Post-World War II, the city faced decline as air travel made more distant destinations accessible. However, in 1976, New Jersey voters approved casino gambling for Atlantic City, leading to a resurgence. The first casino opened in 1978, and the city experienced a casino boom that lasted into the 2000s.
Despite recent economic challenges and the closing of several casinos, Atlantic City continues to evolve, with efforts to diversify its economy beyond gaming. Today, it remains a vibrant community with a storied past, offering a mix of entertainment, history, and seaside charm to residents and visitors alike.
