Cost of Living in Sherman

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: If you are thinking about moving to Sherman, here is an overview of the cost of living there.

Sherman, is a small, affluent community located in Fairfield County, known for its scenic landscapes and high quality of life. The cost of living in Sherman is generally higher than the national average, primarily due to the real estate market and the overall affluence of the area. Housing prices in Sherman can vary significantly based on the location, size, and condition of the property. As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, the median home value in Sherman is quite high compared to national figures, reflecting the desirability of the area.

For 3-bedroom homes, prices typically start around $400,000 and can go up to $700,000 or more, depending on the property's features and location. Larger 4-bedroom homes are even more costly, with prices often ranging from $500,000 to over $1 million. Apartment rentals are less common in this predominantly residential area, but for the few available, a 1 or 2-bedroom unit might rent for anywhere between $1,500 to $2,500 per month. Apartment purchases are not as common as house purchases in Sherman, but condos and townhomes, when available, can range from $200,000 to $500,000 or more, depending on the size and amenities offered.

Dining out in Sherman can also reflect the higher cost of living, with casual dining restaurants typically charging $15 to $25 per person for a meal, and finer dining establishments can be significantly more expensive. Utilities, including electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage services, can cost a household approximately $200 to $400 per month, depending on usage and the size of the home.

Private school tuition varies widely, but in general, it is a significant expense for families in Sherman. Preschool tuition can range from $10,000 to $20,000 per year. Elementary and middle schools can cost between $20,000 to $35,000 annually, while private high schools can be even more expensive, with some tuitions reaching upwards of $40,000 per year. These costs reflect the high-quality education and facilities that these private institutions often provide.
