Cost of Living in Jersey City

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: If you are thinking about moving to Jersey City, here is an overview of the cost of living there.

Jersey City, located just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, is part of the New York metropolitan area and has a cost of living that reflects its proximity to one of the world's most expensive cities. Housing costs in Jersey City are high, though generally less than those in New York City proper. As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, the median home value for a 3-bedroom home in Jersey City is approximately $600,000 to $800,000, while a 4-bedroom home can range from $700,000 to well over $1 million, depending on the neighborhood and the condition of the property. The real estate market is dynamic, and prices can fluctuate based on market trends and economic factors.

Apartment rentals also vary widely based on location, size, and amenities. A 1-bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $1,800 to $3,000 per month, while larger 2-bedroom apartments can range from $2,500 to $4,500 or more. For those looking to purchase an apartment, prices can range from $400,000 for a modest 1-bedroom to over $1 million for a luxury 2-bedroom unit with views of the Manhattan skyline. The cost of living in Jersey City is further compounded by relatively high property taxes, which can affect both homeowners and renters indirectly.

When it comes to dining out, Jersey City offers a range of options from budget-friendly eateries to upscale restaurants. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant might cost around $15 to $25 per person, while a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant could be between $50 and $100 per person, excluding drinks and gratuity. Utilities, including electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage, for an 85m2 apartment can run between $120 and $250 per month, depending on usage and the time of year.

Private school tuition varies widely depending on the institution and the level of education. Preschool costs can range from $1,000 to $2,000 per month. For elementary school, tuition can range from $10,000 to $25,000 per year. Middle school and high school tuitions can be even higher, with some prestigious institutions charging over $30,000 per year. These costs can be a significant factor for families considering private education in Jersey City.
